Coronation Street 1960
In the 1960's version of Coronation Street, the camera technicality was very simple. The same camera shot would be used several times, however there would be a couple of close ups of a characters face whilst they talk. Almost every shot there is more than one person within the picture, eliminating the 180 degree rule in some cases. There is a lot of camera movement whilst filming, a little but of shake which may be the result of the camera equipment used to film the soap. Instead of cutting from shot to shot (editing) they use the camera to shoot sweeping shots. This is also known as a sequence shot when one shot moves to another, within a long take which is not edited at the editing stage.
Coronation Street 2013
In a 2013 episode of Coronation Street, it is much different to the 1960s. The use of camera within the soap is far more technical and more pleasant to watch. Compared to the 1960's episode, there is a higher variation of camera shots, close ups are used more to show facial expressions and emotions and medium shots to show body positioning etc. There are a lot less long takes which contain 2 or more people conversing due to the use of the 180 degree rule, which cuts from person to person as they speak to one another. This is also covered by the editing process. There are no sequence shots like the old episode, once again this is stopped with the use of short takes, also in the editing process.
Sound
Coronation Street 1960
The sound in this example is very monotone and dull, which is very iconic to the years which the soap was filmed in. During the soap, there is very little sound apart from the dialogue spoken by the characters and the odd sound of props being used. Apart from those sounds there is not a lot else which you can hear. The sound is very low quality which would explain the use of low quality sound recording equipment, however that is expected from the year which it is set in.
Coronation Street 2013
The sound in this example is massively different to the 1960's episode. All the sounds including the soundtrack are so much more vibrant and exciting to listen to, attracting you more into watching the programme. Whilst the soap is in play, the speech is still there with the odd prop noise, however there is loads of different sounds which have been incorporated into the shots. For example, the first scene has a smoke alarm which is in the background. This easily is heard by the viewer as it is beeping before the characters even speak. It is a well known sound which viewers can recognise that there is a fire of smoke in the scene. The quality of the sound and recordings in of a very high quality, the sound is recorded in a high definition which improves the whole experience when watching soaps. This is a major difference between the old episode and the new.
Mise-en-scene
Coronation Street 1960
The old episode of coronation street is a good insight into what the style was like in the 1960s due to the mise-en-scene of the scenes in Coronation Street. The furniture and clothing is very dull and simple, the clothes usually have a flower pattern for the women and a shirt and pull over sweater for the men. Whilst the furniture is very dull with neutral colours and wooden features. However, it is very hard to tell what colours the scene actually is due to the episode being in black and white. This also makes it hard to study the lighting which is almost non existent in black and white film.
Coronation Street 2013
The modern Coronation Street has so much more to offer in the Mise-en-scene department. The style has changed to fit the current styles which are popular at the current time, which means clothing and furniture. The clothes are a lot more vibrant with more colours and different varieties such as jeans, suits, dresses and other types of clothes with many different designs on them. This is the same with the furniture, different styles and different material like leather and different types of wood. All of these recognisable features are mainly due to the fact that the soap is in colour, making it easier to notice colour and material, allowing the viewer to enjoy the programme more. The lighting is used in different ways to express different emotions and feelings. They use natural light when filming outside to keep the scene as real as possible. However when filming inside they can use different shades of light which connote different emotions and expressions the people in the scene may be feeling.
Editing
Coronation Street 1960
The editing in this episode is very minuscule as most of the shots are sequence shots which require no editing. The only editing which has been done is the cuts between camera angles and film clips. The sound has also been edited onto the beginning and the break sections within the episode as this will break the episode down into bite size chunks. Some visual editing may have been achieved to change the contrast and brightness of the blacks and whites of the colour to make it easier to watch.
Coronation Street 2013
The editing in this episode is much more impressive than the old episode. The 2013 episode has many more cuts to allow the flow of the programme to easily switch between people and scenes. Not many sequence shots are used in the modern soap as it disrupts the flow of the short clips. Many more camera shots are used like close ups and medium shots. Having a variation of these shots improves the technicality which attracts more attention then the oder episode did. Other editing such as sound effects may have been inserted into the episode as the editing process was being completed. The quality of the video could have also been adjusted by the brightness of the film clips and contrast to also create a more vibrant and colourful episode of soap for the viewers to watch.
